Maybe we should go to Veracruz after all...

After work, we all decided that it was time for us to do some exploring in Tuxtla. Instead of taking the normal route on the way home, we decided to take a new one that Reyna (one of the facilitators) showed us earlier that afternoon. When we rode the new route until it merged off of the common route that we knew would get us home, then walked around in search of a delicious dinner. We asked for a recommendation at a hotel we passed and eventually found the restuarant a few minutes later. The place was really classy and the food was excellent, although a bit pricy in comparison to our other meals so far. After dinner, we decided to head back to the Fiesta Inn to get some things ready for our program today.

Dave came up with a great idea for a brainteaser to do with the kids before the session begins. The game is called "Stick Pass". Everyone sits in a circle and has to pass the sticks either crossed or uncrossed to their partner. There is only one correct way to pass the sticks for each person but you have to try to figure out the rules as you play the game. The kids and facilitators who played had lots of fun but nobody was able to figure out the rule. We plan on doing this game again later with more of the group and hopefully everyone will figure out the pattern! Next we did our icebreaker which is called "Huggy Bear". The leader of the game calls out a phrase like "Huggy Bear 3!" and then the rest of the group must arrange themselves in smaller groups of 3. The people who don't have a group are out and the game continues until there are only 2 winners left. We all thought that the game went really well and everyone seemed to have fun with the game. Our next activity was lead by our guest mentor of the day, Magali. The activity she led is called "Quotes of Leaders". Everyone was split into smaller groups, and each smaller group was given a sheet of quotes by famous leaders. The groups had to choose a quote they liked, discuss it, and then present it to the class. The presentations went well and everyone thought of good examples of how the quote applied to leadership. We followed this activity with the presentations of the Scratch projects that we made in yesterday's sessions. Each group said a few words about which world problem they chose and why, and then they showed their project to the other students and facilitators. The presentations went well and many of the students were able to discuss with the group which problems they identified in the world that leaders can help to resolve. As a final activity to get everyone energized, we played a tag game outside called "Heads and Hips". Each person chooses to either begin the game with their hand on their head or hip. Everyone tries to tag someone else whose hand is in the opposite place. If a "head" person tags a "hips" person, the "hips" person changes into "heads". We really liked this activity because it showed everyone that at the end of the day, we are all on the same team. Everyone had fun running around outside and we thought that it fit very well for an end of the day activity.

For lunch, we went to a restaurant that Joaquin, the director at the Casa Telmex Tuxtla, recommended to us a few days ago. The restaurant is called "Rincón Xallapan" and they serve authentic food from Veracruz. The food was excellent and our waiters were extremely nice and helped us with the menu. We hope to go back before we leave so that we can try other dishes on their menu.
